We are the owners of a small indoor rabbit. Our home is quiet, clean and free of additional pets. We are also well informed and reasonably cognizant of the risk of GI stasis in rabbits. We keep critical care on hand, watch our pet’s fecal and urinary output daily and avoid excess stress, which can bring on stasis. We have been seeing this clinic for our pet’s health needs for about two years. Although, Ive been relatively pleased with the care we’ve received over this time and I appreciate the convenience of the clinic and it’s friendly staff, we recently had an issue when our rabbit developed a skin condition that this clinic was treating for us. We were prescribed an antihistamine for the rabbit and given detailed instructions on how many times a day and how much medication to administer. We were also scheduled for a return visit in 10 days. At the time we began treatment our rabbit was showing no signs of stasis or illness other than the skin condition. We were not informed of any risks associated with the use of the medicine or told to watch him for issues that might arise due to its use. A few days into the treatment I returned home to find our bunny in stasis. It was late evening and I was unable to get him to an emergency vet, so I began critical care as I felt that we were likely dealing with stasis only and not a blockage. I felt I had no choice but to try to get his gut moving again as it looked like he’d already gone all day without a single bowel movement . I am not a vet, obviously, but thankfully after three feedings of critical care and some water, throughout the night, we were finally able to get his bowels to move early the next morning . Some research has led me to peer reviewed studies showing that antihistamine use in rabbits can slow GI gut movement significantly enough to cause stasis and pet owners should watch their pets carefully for signs of stasis when antihistamines are prescribed. I sure wish we had been warned of this at the time of our appointment. I might have been on my guard. When I expressed my concern at this to the veterinarian, her reply, via a staff member, was that stasis cannot be caused by antihistamine use in rabbits and can only be caused by stress. Seems like she was trying to tell me that we caused the problem. In an effort to be as fair as possible, I will say that she is the veterinarian, not me, so I will take her advice and try to ensure that our rabbit is under no stress. Perhaps there is some stress I wasn’t aware of. Our rabbit has only ever had one other case of stasis and that was when he had his neuter surgery. This is not a chronic issue for us. I feel sure it was the introduction of the antihistamine that likely caused this. Needless to say, however, we won’t be bringing the rabbit back to this office. I can’t say how well they treat non-exotic animals. It seems they do a robust business and I have no reason to believe they do a poor job of attending to other types of animals. This is my heads up to rabbit owners that at the least, you will need to do your own research when treatments are prescribed for your pet by this office, so that you can ask appropriate questions and make sure nothing critical is being omitted from the information you are given.
